Wheel sizes, decoded.

From smaller wheels to 32-inch race prototypes. Match the diameter at the tire bead—not just the name on the wheel.

Read 60-622 as 60 mm nominal tire width and 622 mm bead-seat diameter. The second number must match the rim. Inch labels describe an approximate outside size; they are not a reliable rim measurement.

A size name is only the beginning.

Trek reports that Gwendalyn Gibson finished second at Soldier Hollow on September 20, 2026, riding its prototype 32-inch XC bike. Evie Richards and Riley Amos also raced the platform.

Prototype racing is not retail availability. Trek’s report does not supply a complete consumer fit specification. Do not treat it as a conversion kit for a 29-inch bike.

Separately, Schwalbe lists 32-inch G-ONE RS PRO and RX PRO gravel tires as 50-686 and 55-686, with tires and matching tubes announced for April 2027. This establishes the 686 mm sizing connection; it does not identify the tires fitted to Trek’s prototype.

Diameter + width

Match bead diameter, then verify tire width against the exact rim’s approved range. Check hooked/hookless and tubeless requirements, pressure and load limits.

Tire construction & fit

Frame + fork

Use approved wheel sizes and actual inflated clearance throughout travel. A larger wheel affects the complete chassis; axle fit alone is not permission to change diameter.

Mixed wheels

A 29-front / 27.5-rear setup uses 622 mm and 584 mm respectively. Follow the frame maker’s approved configuration and geometry settings; record front and rear separately.

Whole-bike checks

Tubes + tubeless

Use the tube’s listed diameter and width range, correct valve and valve length. For tubeless, bring approved rim, tire, tape, valves and sealant together.

The size chart also helps decode labels on adaptive cycles, handcycles, recumbents, BMX and electric bicycles. It does not establish a wheel’s suitability for their axle systems, loading or intended use. Motorcycle sizing requires its own guide.
